Explore the World and Teach English in Thailand

If you have just graduated from university or are taking a gap year the chances are that you will want to do some travelling and see a little bit of the world. On the other hand you may just be in a job that you are unsatisfied with and wish to explore other opportunities especially as regards working in another country. Or maybe you have been lucky enough in the past to have had a holiday in Thailand, and you have often wondered what it would be like to live there for a period of time.

Thailand is a wonderful country and very diverse, it has the rugged mountains of the North, which is well known for the Hill Tribe people and Chiang Mai the second largest city in Thailand which is very vibrant, but not as bustling and overcrowded as Bangkok. Thailand is also home to some of the most spectacular beaches and islands in South East Asia and perhaps has the most amount of tourists per year out of all the countries in this part of Asia. As stunning as the countryside and coastal areas are, the people of Thailand are well known for their hospitality and welcoming nature, in fact Thailand is often called the 'land of smiles' and is therefore perhaps the first thing you will notice about the people - they are always smiling!

Just imagine yourself sitting on the beach surrounded by coconut trees with the sea gently lapping at your feet, and enjoyed freshly cooked seafood from one of the beach vendors. This is something you will be able to do at the weekends if you work in this tropical country at the same time really soaking up the culture. One of the easiest ways to work in Thailand is by teaching, as a native speaker of English you will find that there is a large demand in nearly all the schools throughout Thailand.

If you are seriously thinking to teach English in Thailand then the easiest route is to get yourself a certificate known as a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). If you have no other formal qualifications this certificate will generally do for most of the schools in Thailand.

Getting hold of a TEFL certificate can be studied for here in England or in Thailand, it is normally a four week course, and if you undertake this course in Thailand there are some distinct advantages. If you study at one of the many schools that offer these courses you will often find that on completion of the course they will also make sure you end up with employment at one of the many schools around the country. If you teach English in Thailand at a government school, they will arrange for your work visa to be put in place, as well as assisting you in getting accommodation. The hours that you will be required to teach English in Thailand vary, but more often than not are usually between 21 and 30 hours a week, depending on the school and your contract of work.
